INSTRUCTIONS FOR EDITING WITH A WORDPROCESSOR
---------------------------------------------
To edit a document with a your chosen word processor or
editor, place the lightbar on the document reference card in the
ALL INDEX CARDS screen, press F10, and then press "w". Follow the
screen prompts to edit the document. It would be very helpful if
the directories containing your word processor and/or editor were
in the PATH statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that they could
be executed from within the C:\CARDINDX\FILES subdirectory.
You will find yourself following a procedure that allows you
to easily switch back and forth between the document reference card
in the CARDINDX program and your word processor or editor program.
You will be instructed to enter "return" (no quotes) at the
DOS prompt after you have finished editing your document. This
will return you to the ALL INDEX CARDS screen with the lightbar on
the document reference card you just left. This switching
procedure is necessary because both CARDINDX and a wordprocessor
program cannot usually fit into conventional RAM memory at the same
time.
When a file already existing in CARDINDX is chosen for
processing with a word processor, it will be found to have carriage
return characters at the end of each line of text. This is because
it must be always saved as an ascii (text) file in order for the
other features of CARDINDX to work. If you plan to do extensive
editing of such a file, you may wish to do a global search-and-
replace of these carriage returns with blank spaces. If you will
be editing this file repeatedly, you may wish to create a short
"macro" to take care of this procedure. Another possibility is to
save such documents in both the wordprocessor and the ascii
formats.
If you decide to always use a word processor to manage your
documents, you can save your documents in the word processor
format. In this case, you will retain all of the advantages of
CARDINDX's multilevel index, but you will lose the high-speed
access feature. You will also lose the printing, copying, and
editing features of CARDINDX. This would still be a useful
alternative if you often needed some of the special capabilities of
your wordprocessor, and speed of access was of less consequence.
